I. Rural Life
A. Western Farmer Isolation
i. many northwester farmers didn’t usually get to see anyone outside their family very often so they enjoyed church and social gatherings and relished in them
a. religion was often what brought groups together
-women were usually the coordinators of such events
b. farmers also came together to share in tasks that perhaps one family could not do on their own, like barn raising, or bringing in crops, husking corn, or threshing wheat
c. women came together to share domestic tasks like sewing, knitting
d. rural people treasured their links to the popular cultured world such as letters or newspapers and magazines
-rural people, once moved to the city, looked back on their rural life nostalgically, mostly b/c they sensed they didn’t have much control of everyday life in the new city world
