I. Varieties of Slavery
A. Legal Basis of Slavery
- Couldn't hold property
- Couldn't leave premises without permission
- Couldn't be out after dark
- Couldn't congregate except for church
- Couldn't carry firearms
- Slave marriages and divorces were not recognized
- Could not strike a white person
a. Not even in self-defense
- If a white killed a slave while beating him, it wasn't considered a crime
- Anyone with even a trace of African ancestry was considered black
- Anyone rumored to be African was considered so unless they could prove otherwise
B. Reality of Slavery
i. Many of these laws were not enforced
a. Many slaves owned property
b. Some learned to read and write
c. They assembled with each other
ii. Slave owners generally punished their slaves except for the big crimes
a. Courts handled those
iii Some lived prison-like lives; some lived pretty free ones
C. Small-farm slaves
i. Many masters worked alongside their slaves on small farms
ii. Developed close relationships with their slaves
a. Much like father and child
i. Could be warm and affectionate
ii. Could be cold and tyrannical
D. Plantation Slaves
i. Sizable slave workforce
a. Masters had much less intimate relationships
E. Task and Gang Systems
i. Task system
a. Slaves given a task and when they finished it they had free-time the rest of the day
ii. Gang system
a. Overseer made the slaves work nonstop for however long he thought a fair workday was
