I. “Honor”
A. Dueling
i. was a way for white southern males to defend their honor
ii. the idea of honor mostly died out in the north, but was alive in the south
a. many believe dueling was a way of distancing themselves from the cruelty and disrespect that were so fundamental to the slave system they controlled
B. Cult of Honor
i. the idea of honor, in the south, was only partly connected to the idea of ethical behavior and bravery
ii. it was also important for saving face in public
a. anything that challenged that dignity, social station or “manhood” was cause for a duel or at least a public rebuke
b. avenging the insults to white southern women was also considered the way of a southern “gentleman”
