Subject: Ch 11 Beth Sections they are in order

Life Under Slavery
A. Staves received at least necessities for them to work and lives.
1. Received cheap clothing and shoes
2. Live in small cabins with a lots of people
B. Special Position of Woman
1. Slave woman were the healers for medical care
2. Slave woman work hard
a. Worked in the field with the men
b. Also took on the women’s chores
i. Like cooking, cleaning, and child bearing
3. Acted as a single parent, most families were split up
4. The woman had special burden, but also special authority.
C. High Slave Mortality Rates
1. In 1820 the ratio was one African America to four whites
a. In 1840 it was 1:5
2. The slow increase of the black population was caused by high death rates
a. Few children served to adulthood
i. Those who did served died younger than a white person
3. The American slave had better conditions than the Caribbean and south American slaves
a. Most master did make some effort to preserve the health
i. By not working them hard as children
D. House Slaves
1. Household servants had a some what easier life than field hands
2. They would be separate domestic staff: nursemaids, housemaids, cooks, and butlers, ect.
a. They live close to the master
b. They ate the leftovers of the whites
3. They received more punishment than the field hands
a. Because they had more contact to the masters
E. Sexual Abuse
1. The females were the most sexual abuse by their masters
2. He pressured them into sex and sometimes raped them
a. The wives couldn’t punish their husbands so they beat or increased workload of the slave woman

Slavery in the Cities
A. They differed from those in the countryside
1. The mater could keep a eye on his slaves in the countryside
a. However in the city they could not
B. Autonomy of Urban Slaves
1. Slaves had job or task to do like mining and lumbering
a. The women were assigned to tasking too
2. The urban slaves had a lot of times to talk with the free blacks
3. Southern found slavery to be incompatible with city life
a. As city grow bigger the slavery declined
i. The reason were social rather than economic
b. The men were soled to the countryside which left the women with the white men
i. Most of the mulattoes were born because of that
4. The segregation for black ad white society grew more


Free African Americans
A. There was about 250,000 free blacks in the slaveholding states
1. More than half were from Virginia and Maryland.
2. Some bought their way to freedom
a. Elizabeth Keckley, a slave women who bought freedom for her and her son
b. Only a few people could do this because of their master
B. Tightened Restrictions on Free Blacks
1. Some were set free by master will
a. To clear their concisions
2. The state laws governing slavery became more rigid
a. Which was part of the response to Nat Turner’s revolt
i. Free black, removed from close supervision by whites, might generate move violence and rebellion than slaves
b. Because the free blacks were getting bigger in population
i. Which treating the whites
c. Grew to a point where free blacks could not live in the southern stats like Arkansas
3. It was hard to be free some preferred to be a slave

The Slave Trade
A. Slave Market
1. Transported on train or river if it was a long journey
a. On short ones slaves would walk
2. They would go to a city like New Orleans and be auction off
a. Some world try to cheat the customer by auction old people
b. The price range was 500 to 170,000
3. Was a big growth and prosperity to slavery
a. Also was horrible aspects
4. The separation of families
B. The Foreign Slave Trade was Worse
1. Federal law had prohibited it
a. They continued to be smuggled into US as late as 1850
b. They argued that it was the same as trading slaves state to state
i. It didn’t go far
