Subject: Ch. 7-Battles with the British

A. British Invasion
1. Napoleon surrenders in 1814
2. England prepared to invade U.S.
a. August 24, 1814 – British entered Washington
i. they set fire to public buildings including the White House
b. they continued toward Baltimore, however Baltimore was prepared
i. Francis Scott Key watched the attack from a British ship and wrote “The Star Spangled Banner”
c. the British left Baltimore
d. September 11, 1814 - British attempted to invade New York, but were unsuccessful
e. in the South British soldiers landed below New Orleans and prepared to advance up th Mississippi
i. January 8, 1815 – the British were stopped by Andrew Jackson, Tennesseans, Kentuckians, Creoles, blacks, pirates, & army troops
ii. finally the British retreated (700 left dead, 1,400 wounded, & 500 prisoners)
iii. Jackson only had 8 killed and 13 wounded
3. later North America found out that Britain & the U.S. had signed a peace treaty several weeks earlier
