The Burr Conspiracy
A. In 1804 Jefferson was reelected as president
B. Essex Junto
1. The most extreme Federalist group
2. Thought New England needed to for a new nation called the “Northern Confederacy”
a. wanted to include New York, New Jersey, & New England
b. Hamilton refused to support this
C. Hamilton & Burr
a. Federalists then turned to Vice President Aaron Burr
i. Burr accepted a proposal to become candidate for New York governor (1804)
ii. Hamilton accused Burr of plotting treason
iii. Burr lost election and blamed Hamilton
b. Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel
i. July 1804 – They met at Weehaken, New Jersey
ii. Hamilton was mortally wounded and died the next day
iii. Burr became a political outcast and fled to New York to avoid an indictment for murder
c. the conspiracy
i. many rumors began to go around that Burr and General James Wilkinson wanted to separate the Southwest from the U. S. & create an empire that Burr would rule
ii. many of Burr’s opponents believed the rumors, including Jefferson
iii. more rumors started – some thought Burr planned to attack New Orleans
iv. Jefferson had Burr and his men arrested as traitors and brought them to Richmond for trial
-he was acquitted for lack of evidence
