Webster-Hayne Debate
A. Controversy over nullification grew more intense
1. In 1820 a great debate happed in the US Senate
a. Over another sectional controversy
B. Debate over federal policy toward western lands.
1. A senator form Connecticut recommended that all land sales and surveys be temporarily discontinued
2. The senator form South Carolina, Robert Y. Hayne
a. Stated by slowing down the west was a way for the east to gain more economic and political power
3. Daniel Webster, senator of Massachusetts and a strong Whig
a. Challenging Hayne to a debate
i. In what he calls their “challenge to the integrity of the Union”
C. Stat’s Right vs. National Power
1. Hayne, coached by Calhoun, responded with a defense of the theory of nullification
2. Webster took two afternoons to respond
a. Known as the “Second Reply to Hayne”
b. Also stated “ Liberty and Union now and forever, one and inseparable.
D. The results of both side form president Jackson
1. Stated that “Our Federal Union- It must be preserved
a. While he spoke he looked directly at Calhoun
2. The two most important figures in government had drown sharp lines between themselves
