I. The Nullification Crisis
A. Fight against the Congressional Tariff Bill
1. South Carolina summoned a convention to nullify Abominable and Congressional Tariffs
2. Elected Hayne to Governor and Calhoun replaced him in the Senate
B. Treason
1. Jackson said nullification was treason
a. He strengthened forts in South Carolina and ordered a war ships and some revenue ships to Charleston
b. He proposed a bill in Congress to authorize the military to make sure that Congress was obeyed
c. Provoked possible violence
C. Compromise
1. No states supported South Carolina
a. Even South Carolina itself was divided
b. Could not hope to beat the federal government
2. Henry Clay saved the day
a. Negotiated a compromise that would lower the tariff by small increments until it was all the way down to where it was before
b. Passed on March 1, 1833
3. Later, the convention reassembled and repealed the nullification of the tariffs
a. But then nullified the Force Bill, which didn't really mean anything
