A. Agrarian tribes of the south
1. in the 1830 the south tribes were trouble to the government
2. The “Five Civilized Tribes” were the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctow
a. live western Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.
b. Most of which had established socity with a economy
c. The Cherokee were the most like whites
B. Removal Act
1. The government negotiate treaties with the southern Indians
a. which would remove them to the west and give the white their land
2. the white were impoatien
3. Jackson signed the Romoval Act
4. The tribes faced combinative pressures form both the state and federal government
a. Most of the tribes were to weak to resist
C. Cherokee Resistance
1. They appealed their case to the supreme court
a. In the Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia and Worcester vs. Georgia
2. The president supported Georgia efforts to remove the Cherokees before the court decision
3. With a response to the Worcester vs. Georgia, Jackson stated that “John Marshall has made his decision” “Now let him enforce it”
a. The decision was not enforced
4. when the Cherokee would not move, Jackson sent his army to round them up
