A. Changing Attitudes toward the Indians.
1. Saw the as noble savages
a. New view of them just “savages” not only uncivilized but uncivilzable
2. The belief that whites should not be expected to live near them, and that the Indian cultures and societies were unworthy of respect
3. The white western favored removal also
a. Would produce conflict and violence between whites and Indians
b. The whites wanted the Indian territory
B. Going though the system
1. Only the federal government had the authority to negotiate with the Indians over land
a. Supreme court decisions established the tribes as “nations within the nation”
2. The tribes were weak and divided
a. The Marshall court stated it had both severity nation and dependent ones
b. And the federal government must take considerable responsibility for it
i. But it didn’t
