Subject: Ch10 - Leisure Activities

I. Leisure Activities
A. urban leisure
i. holidays were important to the Americans b/c it was rare to go on a vacation and Saturday was a regular work day. Also the Sabbath day (Sundays) were reserved for religion and rest a it was generally frowned upon to play games or have fun to Sabbath day
a. this is why holidays such as the 4th of July were so elaborate and important b/c it was one of the only days the workers got off a year
B. rural leisure
i. the farmers(where most fo the u.s. still lived) was a break from the daily grind b/c of the erratic patterns of farmwork
a. when leisure time was seized, men went to taverns for drinking, talking and game playing
b. women usually gathered at another’s home for talking card games or to share work like sewing
-women soon became avid reader usually reading the newspaper, magazines and books; and soon, female writers began to write the “sentimental novel”
C. Public Leisure
i. people often went to see minstrel shows, public sprting events, and the P.T. Barnum’s freak shows(1842-) and later his circus(1870s)
