I. Women and the “Cult of Domesticity”
A. in every aspect of the comparison of men and women during this time stated that the man was sole ruler of the house, his property, and his persons(kids and wife)
i. women had basically no rights
B. Female Education
i. until 1837 women were basically barred from getting a college education until Oberlin in Ohio agreed to let 4 female students enroll and the first women’s college was founded by Mary Lyon
a. these unequal ideas were produced prior to the industrial era and with the decline in the family role in the house, men and women began to play equally important roles
C. New Roles for Women
i. in the mid-19th century, women were viewed as the guardians of “domestic virtues”
a. their roles as mothers and wives became increasingly important to the family dynamic
b. also, women’s roles as consumers became increasingly important
- women learned to place a high value on keeping a clean comfortable home, on entertaining, and on dressing stylishly
D. Women’s separate Sphere
i. women began to form tight knit relationships with other women, which led to the formation of women’s groups and organizations
ii. women also began to read magazines that didn’t focus on politics or religion, but on fashion, shopping, and homemaking advice
E. Benefits and Costs
i. benefits of the “Women’s Separate Sphere”:
a. allowed women to live greater lives of material comfort than in the past
b. placed a higher value on their “ female virtues”
c. placed a higher value on their roles as wife and mother
ii. costs of the “Women’s Separate Sphere”:
a. women were left increasingly detached from the public world
b. left fewer outlets for women’s energies and interests
iii. unmarried women had to find their own source of income
a. many became teachers or nurses
- basically professions that seemed to call for the same female qualities that made women important in the home
F. Working Class Women
i. mostly considered a characteristic of the lower classes
a. lower class women could not afford to cultivate the “domestic virtues”
b. the lower class women endured far worse conditions than that of middle class female workers
c. many lower class women also found work as housekeepers for the upper and middle classes and this became the norm for many lower class women
