Just because one ignorant basterd decides to spew some stupid comment, doesn't mean that reflex's the feelings of entire country. And who was this commentator from Texas? Do you have a name? I feel that before you go bashing my country on how we're not good friends, you look at some of the messages your own articles and commentators spit out. Date Posted: 23:34:23 10/22/04 Fri Guys, I think we have to realise that there will always be factions within both our societies that have a mutual disdain for each other. It is also true that there are many who have great mutual affection for our countries (UK and USA). I think the greater point that people are trying to express is this: While the USA is a close ally in many issues, and we share much in common (language, ideology etc), we must always remember that the USA is a foreign country, with a Government that will always act in the US national interest. When the US national interest conflicts with the British national interest, the US interests will prevail. I have already given many examples of this like Suez. There are many other examples like the unhindered funding Noraid were able to raise in the USA for many years up to September 11th. The money that was raised in the US contributed directly to the murder of British citizens. These actions have not gone unnoticed. We have to remember that many of these issues discussed are the actions of the US Government, not the American people (apart from Noraid). There are many well-known anti-British members of the US political establishment (mainly of Irish origin I suspect), just as there are many anti-American members of the British Parliament. The main point is that this kind of politics has never entered into Commonwealth affairs to my knowledge. However, I was told of details of an aircraft programme that Britain was developing years ago, and Australia was a potential customer of ours. The US offered Australia free planes until their new aircraft was ready, which Australia accepted. The result was that our aircraft programme was killed off. I don’t know the exact details of this affair yet. Although I believe that we should be an ally of the US, I think we should always act in our own interests, and keep our distance when necessary. When judging your friends, it is actions, not deeds that count, so the nations of the Commonwealth are closer friends by that definition. However, let’s not let Commonwealth unity become a forum for anti-Americanism. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
