] Date Posted: 21:05:20 10/26/04 Tue In reply to: Paddy (Scotland) 's message, "Australia, Canada, GB, NZ & the U.S.A." on 19:59:31 10/26/04 Tue First of all, this article is a bit out of date. Jean Chretien is no longer PM of Canada - he has been replaced by Paul Martin, who, though still opposed to the Iraq war, is more conciliatory towards the US and is loyal to the Queen. This article is about our relations with a foreign power, the US, and much of the difference of opinion is based on the attitude of the US government towards their allies in regards to Iraq. The fact that we are divided over the US means that we are not totally under their thumb. At least Canada and New Zealand have stood up to them. I don't see how a difference of opinion towards the US can damage our relations with each other, which are still quite good. The relations with each other are not discussed in the article as they have not gone really sour. The difference of opinion towards the US is mainly because of the different political idiologies in power in the CANZUK countries. This article does not discuss the dominions' relationship with the UK, which is still quite solid and nothing controversial is happening amongst us. Don't forget, this article is about government positions. I'll bet the people of the four CANZUK countries are all about the same in their attitude towards the US and the Iraq war. In all four countries, there are people who support it and people who oppose it. I am sure that the submarine crisis between Britain and Canada, which has happened since, will soon get sorted out as it has not ruined most Canadians' view of Britain. However, this article does show that we need more cooperation amongst the four CANZUK countries, especially when dealing with foreign powers.
