Sydney, Australia now has a majority of people from non-UK origins apparently.

I'm not sure where you got your data from or how "non-UK origin" is being defined. There are large numbers of Kiwis in Sydney, for example, and many of them would be defined as being of "UK-origin" in New Zealand, but perhaps of "non-UK origin" in Australia, depending on the ideological bent of the person inventing the statistical categories. Whatever.

Whether it is true or not, this tendency conveniently proves one of our points: the British institutions and values that connect Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada have helped to create countries that are overwhelmingly attractive to migrants. Given the importance of this cultural (not racial, not ethnic) core, it would be a good idea if we could work more closely together to build on the things which set us apart from most other countries on the planet.

... but it doesn't make those places any less British. Ian is right: the important things here are the cultural and political traditions which can accomodate anyone, from whatever ethnic or racial background. Our identity is already not based on 'race' - why not take it a step further and stop basing it on geography? Roll on the Federation.

... unless, of course, one takes the precaution of not being a penniless hippie living in a squat in Stoke Newington. Then it's quite nice.

As for not being British, I defy you to produce a foreigner whose images of Britain are not all London images: Routemasters, Buck House, Westminster, all the rest of it. Uninformed as this may be, and as much as your images of Britain may be noble Highland Cattle lowering their heads to the loch beyint the glen, or cricket on the lawn near a gothic pub in Surrey, or whatever, to 99% of the world's population, it's London.

... I think that the FC capital should under no circumstances be London. No one outside Britain is going to swallow a proposal which places their new capital in a city which is so country-specific as London.

London is a unique place. It's different from the rest of Britain and also from anywhere else on earth. It's instantly recognisable and iconic. It's stupid to say it 'could be anywhere' just because it's multi-ethinic and international.

[> Subject: London is one of a handful of great world cities - I think only on a par with New York. But it looks a lot better if you have money. So what? So do most great international centres.
