] Date Posted: 01:50:27 12/13/04 Mon Just watching a movie on the CBC retelling the true story of Winnie the Pooh. The real Winnie was a bear cub who was found by a Canadian army unit en route to their training camp. The bear was found near White River, in northern Ontario, but was named 'Winnie' by Harry Colebourne in honour of his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. While the bear made the crossing to Britain, they left the bear in care of the London Zoo when the unit went to France. It was there that A.A. Milne and his son, Christopher Robin, met her acquaintance (Yes, Winnie was a she). The movie stars Gil Bellows (who was in the US television series "Ally McBeal"), as well as British stars David Suchet and Stephen Fry. Here's to Winnie the Pooh, a true Anglosphere collaboration - a Canadian bear, a British story-teller, and good old American movie magic.
