Subject: Queen Victoria's statue restored in Quebec

A statute of Queen Victoria which stood proudly in downtown Quebec City was toppled and decapitated by radical Quebec separatists in 1963. The pieces were then stored at the city's museum. The city has decided to repair it and put it back on display in the downtown park where it once stood. Quebec City officials say that it is part of their history.

This is an amazing turn-around for Quebec - there is hope for them yet.

I would be less surprised if even India were to restore its imperial statues. I understand that Wolfe's tomb in Quebec city once bore the epitaph "Here Lies Wolfe Victorious", but that it was destroyed by vandals and then replaced with a tomb on which the word "victorious" did not appear, so as not to upset French sensibilities. Perhaps now is the time to pursuade the authorities to put the adjective back.
