Subject: First Competition for the Grade IV Band

I thought I would share my first band competion expierience with everyone, so here it is .I have only been playing pipes for a short time know ( About 2 1/2 years ) and have competed solo 3 times in the last year. I don't get nervous in front of the judge, I am there to have fun and do my best, the rest doesn't really matter to me. Up until yesterday I had the same attitude towards competing with the grad IV band. I had never competed in a band competion before, I thought peice of cake. I was confident in the set we were playing, I have been playing it a while and felt pretty good about it. We were marching over to the competition circle, we sounded great, still feeling really confident. We had a little time for some fine tuning right as we got to the stadium, we played Scotland The Brave, Chris said " Thats was absolutley brilliant ", my confidence level went up another notch. We form up and approch the line, at that very moment it hit me like a lightining bolt, If I screw up I am going to let down everyone standing here with me who have worked just as hard as I have. And I felt ready to chuck the meat pie I ate about an hour before. We start the set and march into the circle. Thats about all I remember. It was like I blinked my eye heard a double beat and saw Mike step out and it was done. Mike called out " Collins Cattle ", we started playing it faster than I ever have reformed the circle and ran out in sort of a counter march ( not really it just felt that way ). It will be better next time, know that I know what to expect. I am laughing about it know, but I never expected that to happen, and know that I did, I know to expect it and find some way to counter the affect of " Head Trash ". It was great though. I felt good about the way we played and was proud to stand next to Mike and all my fellow band members. I don't know if anyone else remebers the first time they competed with a band, but I will probably never forget mine.
