>Shrewsbury today brought womens football down to a new low. In a game that was always going to be tense, the verbal abuse from the touchline of the linesmen, referee and Bridgnorth players excacerbated the problems. The game was physical and tough with indifferent defending by Bridgnorth gifting Shrewsbury the victory. Shrewsbury went ahead in the 37th minute after Bridgnorth failed to clear a succesion of corners the final corner being particularly badly dealt with. Bridgnorth pulled the game level in the 42nd minute after Jez Moss headed the ball on for Gemma Moss to go on a solo run to equalize. The 2nd half started with the game all square. Just 3 minutes into it, Shrewsbury were 2-1 ahead after a Bridgnorth attack broke down. It was 3-1 after 65 minutes after a speculative long shot was well saved by Becky Fryer who couldnt hold the shot, the ball dropped for a simple tap in for the Shrewsbury forward. Bridgnorth fought back strongly and in the 76th minute scored their 2nd after a superb corner was headed in by Zara McIntosh. Bridgnorth pushed and pressureized for the last 15 minutes with Shrewsbury defending desperately. It was not too be unfortunately with Shrewsbury just hanging on. The most disgusting behaviour by Shrewsbury then occured. As the players were shaking hands at the end, one particular player that had been substituted at half time made a beeline for a Bridgnorth forward, after shaking her hand she then punched her in the face for absolutely no reason, 2 more Shrewsbury players then jumped on top, it was then a mellee with The Bridgnorth girls running to the defence of their colleague. The chaos continued with observers stepping in to try and break up the tangle. Local derby or not, i find it incredible that Shrewsbury were so desperate for the win that they would sink to the levels they did today.
