Well, if every school were funded equally per student, and if we didn't have "coaches" who teach putting an emphasis on their star running back "getting" passing grades when the kid can't read or write at 11th grade, you'd see less of this problem.

Personally, I think teachers need to be paid (or EMPLOYED even) based on the success or failure of their student-population.

I also think that any teacher/coach/administrator found to be allowing a student with literacy issues to pass for extracurricular reasons should be fired immediately.

What would happen if our school systems kept cranking out illiterate kids and one of 'em got a good enough lawyer to turn around and sue 'em for NOT doing what they were supposed to do?

Sure it's the responibility of the student, but we're dealing with kids, here. They're not born with initiative. It, too, is a learned value.
