LETTING COPS LIVE ELSEWHERE COULD BENEFIT N.O. ECONOMICALLY, SAYS EXPERT

New Orleans city leaders are considering amending the domicile law in order to allow cops live outside the city, but could it have unintended consequences?

Domicile law supporters say changing it could have a negative economic impact on New Orleans, if police officers that currently live here pack up and move.

Economist Dub Lane at UNO says it is possible that changing the domicile requirements could results in some officers moving out to the suburbs and taking some of their money with them, but he says it would be more than worth it to have a safer city.

“If we can get that extra 200 police and improve safety in the city and make other people want to live here, that benefit would be an order of magnitude bigger,” said Professor Lane.

Lane says he does not think enough police officers would move out of the city to make a significantly negative impact on the city’s economy.
