They don't use the higher end parts that people who build their own get. It's why they end up replacing so many parts. I think they use Tyan or Intel boards, can't remember. What sucks is that you can't get the 128 MB NVidia board from Dell.
I only use ASUS boards. You will take a hit with a Dell system in performance. The good thing about Dell is the 3 yrs parts replacement. It's less hassle and easier if you don't much about the inside of a PC.
I just priced one from Dell, and it's $1644.00 without monitor. It's about the same, except the vid card is not as good, and there are some extra bells and whistles that I couldn't unselect, but a sales rep could. You might be able to get it down another $200.00. Also, see what crap they add on can be removed for more savings.
I just priced a similar PC at Falcon NW, and it was $2011.00. I didn't realize how much more expensive they were.
I don't know where Mau lives in relation to you, but I am in North Carolina, so if I build this, I could help with basic over the phone support, but it will be up to you to replace the parts.
Hmm, it would even be best for you to purchase the parts. You could have them shipped to Mau or I to put together, then ship everything back to you. Best idea would be if you knew someone close who could take the parts and build it for you.
The more I think about it, the better I think it is for you to buy the parts and have someone build it for you. If they know what they are doing it should take about 3 hours. I always run into a problem or two.
I am going to install my new MB and CPU after I finish this post.
So, you will have much greater performance from the PC I speced than a Dell at a comparible price, but you will have great support and the PC will be built and ready to role when you get it. It's a tough choice.
