Subject: Dexter's Run

Well ladies and gentlemen;
another great event has come and gone. For those interested, here's how it went - from my perspective...
The morning started off with a study of the Weather Channel's radar. When I went to bed Friday night, the Weather Channel called for thunderstorms Saturday p.m. When I woke up, a mass of weather was accumulating in the gulf just south of the coast line. It appeared to be moving Northeast, so I chose to risk it.
I met up with Bill, Tony, and Chuck and rode up to 85 in Crestview where we caught up with Sheron & Charles, Gail, John, and Stephen Re and his wife (forgot her name, my bad.)
We sat in the strip mall parking lot just west of the Spanish Trail Park. Other riders would pull in, thinking we were the ride. Lesson learned? Take the $5.00 and run! (Just kidding.)
We rode to the park and lined up with a total of $150 bikes. John and Bill both volunteered to take some children as passangers who were friends of Dexter's.
We mingled and after a briefing, welcome, and invocation we hit the road; escorted by Crestview and Okaloosa's finest. I must echo the appreciation to these men and women who take time of their schedule to support these charity rides! THANK YOU TO ALL OFFICERS who supported this event.
The ride took us on some older, narrower roads through some beautiful country. We took a break in Laurel Hill and mingled some more. It was a good opportunity to talk up STAR - I know I spoke with one very interested Vulcan owner, and I'm sure the others talked us up as well. We wore our vests and T-shirts with pride and represented what STAR is all about.
We pulled out and headed south where the skyline had a distinctive feature, a curtain of rain. I learned how Gail does her rain-dance, I think it's called "breathing."
On state road 393 as we headed west, the inevitable happened when riding in Florida - rain; and LOTS of it.
Rule # 86 of riding in Florida (with Gail); you will come home with blue underwear. It was that wet. There was no where to pull over, and a few bikes pulled over. Rule #87 of riding in Florida - Big Air Kits are not the best approach.
What was impressive was watching Bill's passenger holding on. A young 9 - 11 year old girl, getting as soaked as the veterans riders.
It was humorous to note that this was Bill & Gails second shower together in the same day!
We finally broke out of the downpour and were greeted by more sun and beautiful roads. We returned to the Spanish Trail park where a blues band enterained the crowd while food and refreshments were served.
There were classic roadsters to view and auctions and lots of commraderie amongst riders to be had.
Bob Douglas encountered some wiring problems and John Coleman, brother that he is, escorted Bob to his home to make sure his bike made it. Bill and I followed.
After getting home, removing the boots and drying off, I relaxed and reflected on a great event with some great people. Looking forward to our next excursion!

Sincerely (almost)...

Bob
