This exercise concerns line breaks, the rhythm of your poems and the sound of your work...

1. Write a poem that is an emotional outburst (joy, anger, love, hate), using a lot of enjambment and a few end stopped lines. Play around with breaking apart parts of language that usually go together.

2. Write a short nonsense poem, a maximum of 5 lines, in which you pay attention to the rhythms of each line rather than the logical meaning of the words. Read it aloud several times. When you know the rhythms well, and enjoy how the fit together, try to substitute meaningful words in the exact same rhythm.

3. Choose a poet you admire, read at least one book of his or her work, and carefully study how this writer uses lines and stanzas. Then take a draft of one of your own poems and redo the lines and stanzas as you imagine this writer would.
