He grew up in east philly
It was a bad neighborhood
no one from here
ever came to no good
But when he's about ten
his daddy won him a guitar
in a crooked craps game
in the back of a bar

Phil was a natural
he sang with old soul
when he fell into his trance
the songs started to flow
A guy from up the next block
brought over his drums
and a drunk guy with a washtub bass
they started to jam

shot right to the top
from right where he came
They tried to leave it all behind
But it's all a part of him

were doomed before they began

He started to carry a pistol
because the pot made him paranoid
he had limo's and lear jets
but he's still just one of the boys
The girls all screamed when he sang his songs
but didn't hear the stories he told
and the one song that carried him to the top
said I'm not growing old

All the people said what a shame
drugs and money and his vices
the record company and mtv
made a killing on his demise

the poor boy who rose above it all
and couldn't handle it when he got there
they all marveled at his fall
