My engine was taken out of my boat and I am looking to replace it with a Chris Craft engine with more power. What other engines typically fit the mounts of the K engine? Any advice about the transmission replacement or solutions to problems i am going to run into?

Hello all, I tried one post earlier but it didn't seem to take so I'll try again.
I'm hoping to find info or interested party for what I believe is an early to mid 1950's Chris-Craft Runabout. I'm guessing it's 16'- haven't pulled a tape on it yet - and it looks to be complete with all hardware, flat head v-8, prop,I believe original trailer, ect. It appears to be a complete vessel, just the wood is all rotten.
Is the wood worth anything for templates for someone to build a new shell and reuse everything else or not? I'm not real sure what I've got here, but would like to sell it in the hopes that someone can bring it to life again.
I'm hoping to find some #'s on it and take photos in the near future to help find out exactly what it is.
Any info or help would be appriciated.
Thanks Dave

Recently purchased a '62 23' Sea Skiff I/m and looking for advice. In inspecting and scratching the bottom of the hull I noticed what looked like a thin layer of epoxy after tearing a piece of the flaking bottom paint. Did CC apply something of the sort on the bottoms or was this something done at a later? We plan to bring the bottom to bare wood anyway and applying a coat of flexible epoxy before applying bottom paint. Any thoughts on this situation? This is a great site and full of great information. Very glad I discovered it. The one thing I find lacking is a gallery of photos. If any one owns or has photos of a 23' of 1961-1964 I would much appreciate seeing them. Thank you.

Correct prop? -- Glenn Ross, 22:43:04 08/05/03 Tue (cache-mtc-am01.proxy.aol.com/64.12.97.6)
Hello,
I haven't noticed anyone from the Chesapeake Bay area here; guess I'll be the one. Dad recently bought a 57 22' CC Skiff. It needs a complete restoration, though he won't admit it yet. She needs many frames replaced and was stored poorly. Anyway, during our fixing and patching to slow the tide, we thought the prop is way too small. There just seemed to be a lot of extra clearance. We dug through the paperwork and found a 1986 survey states a 13" prop. Right now it is only 10". Bronze doesn?t shrink, does it? The engine is the original "K" series with a single carb. I have read they came with as many as three. Does anyone have an idea what may be the properly sized prop? We wouldn't mind getting all the power (economy) the girl has to offer, assuming the hull stays together.
Fair winds,
Glenn Ross

Hi all, well I have bought yet another wooden boat (no end in sight) This one is a 22' Sea Skiff Ranger trunk cabin. It is reported to be in good condition but I think way under powered with its 6 cyl motor.I am wondering if it is under propped as well with only a 12X12prop. Anyone familiar with this model and can point me in the right direction? I have had some exposure to regular Sea Skiffs but not this model.Wondering what its problem areas are? I am sure the windshields are typical and will be plagued by leaks and punky wood.Electrics are updated...Going next Sat to bring her home to stay at our lake here in SC. Thanks all.

I have a windshield from a 1958-1959 22' Sea Skiff Ranger that I am willing to give to someone who can put it to good use. This is one of the rare stainless steel windshields with fixed front glass and moveable vent windows on the sides. (See page 509 of "Chris Craft - The Essential Guide".) There were only 170 of these boats made. All stainless is in great condition. Side glass is good. Front glass has been cracked by vandals. Most of the wood is rotten and needs to be replaced, but it's all there for patterns.
I hate to pitch it, but I have no use for it, and it's destined for the dumpster by Labor Day if no one wants it. As it's free, I will not ship it, so who ever wants it, needs to pick it up from the Detroit area. Prefer giving it to someone who can put it to good use. Email if interested. Thanks.

- Refastening lapstrake boats -- Paul Palumbo, 11:41:53 05/31/03 Sat (cache-rl05.proxy.aol.com/152.163.252.229)
Just came across your interesting/informative site. If anyone is interested, I used to own a 30' '59 CC Skiff. I refastened her where she was leaking, using an interesting type to bronze nut/bole that was manf by the Century co. It consisted of a very small bronze bolt, probably about 1/8" and about 2-3" long, with a flat head. The bolt consisted of a square washerlike threaded piece with the corners folded over to provide a grip for the wood. Wherever the leaks in the laps were, I drilled a small pilot hole between the rivets, and inserted the bolt from the outside. The washerlike bolt was threaded from the inside; some sealant was squeezed into the seam from the inside, and the screw/nut was tightened. I cured a lot of leaks this way. I don't know where you could find fastenings like this, maybe would have to be special made. Good luck to all you restorers out there.

- Troubleshooting -- Bob, 05:51:00 05/18/03 Sun (cache-mtc-am01.proxy.aol.com/64.12.97.6)
My 1957 30' open Sea Skiff wes closely examined over the winter to identify and correct sources of noise and vibration. We have accomplished a very great improvement. The findings might be helpful to others as you keep these wonderful woodies in shape. We found 1.) the duplex wood pads through which the rudders were mounted were loosely located, bedding had deteriorated and pads were cracked or split. This was also the condition of the strut pads. All four were replaced. 2.) While rudders were OK, the packing glands and shafthead retainers were worn and replaced. 3.) all Yoke connections in the steering system rods were badly worn or corroded. The threaded pins were especially bad. The yokes were drilled and bushed and new shouldered pins used. 4.) the props, which had been reconditioned numerous times before and said to be OK were viewed through new closer standards. While meeting the needs of 95% of the applications, the props were replaced. Consistent blade shape within the unit and between the units was improved markedly. All These changes have resulted in a great gain in smoothness and reduced noise. Performance is better with the new 14x12 cupped propellers replacing the old 14x11 on this repowered hull using twin 2001 Chrysler LM 225HP V8s. The lesson seems to be that tighter standards show the way to better performance. Bob

- Restoring a Lapstreak -- Paul Lewis, 11:13:33 02/25/03 Tue (1Cust202.tnt13.det3.da.uu.net/67.217.12.202)
I'm about to start stripping the hull on my 1955 22' Sea skiff. I've recieved some great information from other lapstrake owners and wondered if anyone else thought about this technique.
I've been told to strip the hullof all paint, or most of it so I can get a smooth hull. Next tighten and fix all the screws. Clean all loose paint and glue from between the strakes. Apply a wood preservative to the hull. Then push in new 3M 5200 between the strakes. Finally apply a flexable epoxy (CPES) to the hull followed by a good hull paint.
Someone also suggested using cualk at all of the strake joints. The idea of the 3M 5200 sounds like a better idea to me.
Any Ideas or suggestions, or am I on the right track?
Thanks
Paul

Hello All CCSSC Members:
We will be attending the St. Augustine Rendezvous, St. Johns River Cruise, Mt Dora Boat show and Hartwell Boat Show. If you are going to attend any of these, pleas let us know so that we can meet you.
MT. DORA Annual Meeting of CCSSC at 11 AM at the Pavillion in the park by the lake. Please try to come.
We will not have our boat in the water at Mt. Dora. However, at the HARTWELL BOAT SHOW there will be an award given to the BEST DECORATED CHRIS CRAFT SEA SKIFF. The boats should be decorated consistant with the age of the boat and if you wish to dig out your poodle skirts and decorate yourself too, all the better. This promises to be fun, hope you all participate.
We plan to have a CCSSC activity on FRIDAY EVENING. It will either be a "dutch treat" at a local restaurant or, weather permitting try for another WEENIE ROAST at the State Park (Brrrrr, remember two years ago?). Please let us know when you are coming. ALSO REMEMBER THERE ARE ACTIVITIES ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY... not just the show on Saturday. Contact Julie for more information.

This may be a little premature but.....Whose going to Mount Dora??? -- Jennifer, 09:42:15 01/17/03 Fri (dialup-65.58.22.212.Dial1.Atlanta1.Level3.net/65.58.22.212)
Was just wondering who was going to show up at Mount Dora, and how many Skiffs we might have down there. I don't know if Dennis and Julie will bring Sport or the Jersey Skiff, and I do know that Bob Churchill won't be attending, so how many of us are there going to be?
And if we do have a good showing, any chance of us getting a decent dock space this year? Instead of being shoved out on the Boardwalk for what, like the 4 year in a row?
I won't be able to take the river cruise with you all, hey, remember I am the kid and I do still have to work for a living, LOL!! Seriously, I just can't spend that much time away from the office, especially since the Hartwell show is the week after and I'll be off for that as well.
I hope we have a good showing, and hope to see some of my new friends from Joe Wheeler in attendance!

Thanks to my friend Mom a/k/a Songbird for our new Banner!!! -- Jennifer, 09:10:51 01/15/03 Wed (dialup-67.30.250.131.Dial1.Atlanta1.Level3.net/67.30.250.131)
As you can see, we now officially have a banner on the Sea Skiff message board. My friend Mom (okay so I call her that, remember I am the "kid" of the group LOL!) was nice enough to put this together and host it on her website.
The pictures are from both Sea Skiff's weekends, the first being at Hartwell in 2001 and the 2nd at Joe Wheeler State Park in 2002.
Mom is also kind enough to have a small picture album of Sea Skiffs on her website, which she will graciously allow us to add to when we get more of our beauties.
Her website address is:
http://www.homestead.com/jagandcompany/
Okay, you caught me, my other passion in life besides Sea Skiffs is the television show JAG. I confess that I'm a JAGnik, and this is actually how I met Mom. Anyway, scroll down, and click on the Chris Craft Sea Skiff Club, and it will not only bring up the banner but other pictures as well. And what's really cool, if you click on the banner, it will link you directly to this board!!
Thanks for you hard work Mom, now if we could get you to Mount Dora I'm sure that most Skiff owners would be glad to give you a ride!!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year & Happy Hanakuh to all!! -- Jennifer, 10:16:06 12/12/02 Thu (dialup-67.30.250.20.Dial1.Atlanta1.Level3.net/67.30.250.20)
I know in today's society it isn't politically correct to say Merry Christmas, but oh well!!
I have burned a CD of Sea Skiff pictures (including some from both Sea Skiff weekends at Hartwell and Joe Wheeler) and have sent them to a friend of mine who will be making a banner containing pictures of our Sea Skiffs. I know its been forever, but I have been stressing over a state exam had to take and issues with the state licensing board I was dealing with since January. They are resolved (yeah I passed my test, LOL!) and now I can hopefully get back to more important things, like SEA SKIFFS!!!
I hope everyone has a very good Holiday, and I just want to say I am grateful for having the privilege of meeting several of you and am honored to call you friends!
Take Care!

There's a fellow with a 30' 1960 Sea Skiff for sale at what seems like quite a good price. It's in running condition, original engines. Interior is mostly original as well. Are there any particular "trouble spots" I should be checking for in this model and year? Based on a quick first look, it does seem pretty clean and sound...

- Sea Skiff Bow Flags -- Faye, 07:28:04 11/06/02 Wed (cache-dp01.proxy.aol.com/205.188.209.101)
Just a reminder that there will be no more Sea Skiff Flags like the ones we sold. My vendor is quitting business. The Michigan Chapter of ACBS has found a source and will be selling the flags from their chapter if you want them. Their flags will be on the same fabric as the Chris Craft Flags that they currently sell. Contact them if you need a flag. We would like for our boats to use the SeaSkiff Flag when we are all together... It looks soooooo good!

Good Job Jennifer... I hope the message board catches on. We need to spread the word. Why don't you contact Bill Large and give him the address for the newsletter. I hope that a lot of people sign on. I am sending this address to Randy for the web-page, hoping that we can link to it. Talk to you soon. It was great to see you and your Dad in Wheeler. We look forward to seeing you in St. Augustine? Faye

Joe Wheeler was a success!!! -- Jennifer, 13:00:36 10/27/02 Sun (dialup-63.210.79.122.Dial1.Atlanta1.Level3.net/63.210.79.122)
Wow! We have 10 boats in the water at Joe Wheeler, what a nice display of Sea Skiff's! Of course my was being its usual temperamental self and wouldn't run, but Chris Smith was nice enough to allow me to ride in Odyssea, and what a ride!
Why ride in a Chevy when you can ride in a Cadillac? Yippee! It was also great to meet some new folks, Ken & Nan, Dick & Janet, Ron & Jo Carol (I hope I got that right), Ray & Judy, and of course my friends Bob & Sheila, Dennis & Julie (and Ben!) and Alan & Faye.
All in all it was a successful weekend, and let's keep those Skiff's going!
