There is "rope" packing inside stuffing box. Sometimes you need to replace it. Are you seeing any material shavings from shaft? this is a sure sign packing needs to be replaced. Some times you can stop leak by tightening stuffing box with pipe wrench(s). If you need to replace it, take old packing out so you can tell size or measure distance between shaft and end of stuffing box. Material is usually 3/8 or 1/4. When replacing, cut into pieces, (rings) so each piece fits around shaft. Stagger cuts or seams. install and retighten.
