I tend to see the beginners event as a special case. It is a trophy for those people who are in their first year on the university circuit, and have not done ballroom or latin competitively before. Nureyev and Fontane could have entered beginners, its true, and it would have been good for them to have done so. (Whichever Uni would have had a kick-ass offbeat team as well!). Yet they shouldn't have entered Novice.
Likewise, I think Scott, Sarah, et al, should have entered beginners. But not Novice or Intermediate.
The mistake is seeing beginners as the bottom rung of the Adv/ Int/ Nov categorisation. It isn't. It is a separate event, and I don't see any contradiction in the best beginner couple also winning advanced.
