Don't forget that most of Ballroom originated in the 10s/20s with the advent of Jazz music. Therefore people in these early films (VW excepted) are pioneering this type of dancing. 80 or 90 years later I wouldn't expect it to look the same since it has developed tremendously since then. Just look in Dance News at some of the Champions of yester year!! Their hold and posture doesn't resemble that of today's best dancers at all!
