My interpretation is that, historically, it's the other way round.
Since the man stands slightly to the left of the woman, he needs to look leftwards to see where he is going. The rest of the man's posture was influenced by the need to look left, which then influenced the woman's posture. And the woman needs to look left because otherwise it cramps both of their posture...
