It is not just the thought of whether a couple will make the Advanced final that will stop them dancing up. If you have a choice between the Intermediate semi, you would get to dance something like 3 rounds of 2 out of the 3 dances. If you are out in the first round of Advanced you get to dance one round of 2 out of the 4.

Why bother learning 4 dances to a level where you (just might) get through a round, when you can spend more time on 3 dances and (just might) make a final! As someone who was out in the first round of advanced at IVDA , I was really pissed off - because I had been there all day, and practiced hard, to dance for less than 5 minutes.

There is no incentive to dance up to Advanced unless you have to. Sure, if you are Scott then you know you will make the advanced final. Everyone else? Particularly since by IVDA you will have a PRETTY GOOD idea of whether the final is achievable!
