My suggestion is merely an improvement on what others have suggested. People have suggested fixed rules about what level you can enter based on previous success. The idea has been dismissed on the grounds that some such people (particularly women with new inexperienced partners) won't be going far in int, let alone adv. My suggsetion allows such people to enter intermediate, but means that any people with previous success in int 'have' to enter advanced.

What people get annoyed with, IMO, is that we have guidelines, but don't make them rules because of cases like that above. But when people dance against the guidelines and do well in the final, we feel they have abused our goodwill in not making the guidelines into rules. Personally, if danced against the guidelines and did well, I'd feel bad about it.

Whether intermediate should be the people who were intermediate at the beginning of the year or the people who are intermediate at the end of the year is a different debate. I think most people feel it has to be end-of-the-year standard, as, if nothing else, it's too hard to define otherwise.

Personally, I would feel that if I were expecting to make the int final, I would rather see how I fared in advanced anyway.

See above.

I agree with Sarah. The difference between winning int and coming third is the difference between being 20th and 22nd overall, or something like that. Not like the difference between winning and coming third in advanced. Making the int semi or final is certainly an achievement, as for most people it means they feel they are ready to tackle advanced.
