Sorry guys, yet another post I'm afraid!

Currently drafting the amalgamated teams rule (not easy!) to include all the recent discussion. A few thoughts on the scoring:

-Once a couple becomes part of an amalgamated team they *cannot* score for their parent university. In order to allow this we would have to a) introduce a completely different (inferior) overall scoring system b) remove the 'teams go through as a unit' rule. Given that b) is the reason for having the amalgamated teams in the first place, this is kinda pointless!

Note: an amalgamated team progresses based on the performance of all couples, so it is nonsensical to then divide it back into individual contributions. Say Keele + 2 advanced couples amalgamated, and their result counted for both unis - Keele's score would be drastically improved by someone else's couples! This is why 'amalgamated teams scoring for parent unis' is incompatible with 'teams as units'.

-Assuming that we're moving towards a concept of a series of separate amalgamated teams from 2ish unis, as opposed to a centralised odds team, it does not seem sensible to have an 'Amalgamated Uni' (as I rather pretentiously put it :-) in the overall scoring. I would suggest that amalgamated teams' results are not carried into the overall scoring at all. The scoring system copes with this perfectly, because it does not suffer from 'contraction wrt irrelevants'. Hooray.
