Indeed, what you say would almost have happened this year, as Tris and Jumin would have been a lot closer to you and Nick.
Unfortunately, the only fair way to work out individual placings is to do what Greg suggests and get Oxford's two heats to dance against each other and the same for Cambridge. But that would be a terrible thing to do at a Varsity match.
The new system is fairer, though the awards should be given as 'Greatest Oxford contribution in ballroom' etc.
