Subject: Poole Lighthouse Review

Top gig last night at a top venue, never been to Poole Lighthouse
before and it's very smart. Acoistics were good, and the wierdest
thing which I've never experienced before in my tender 40 years is a
wooden suspended floor. Even before the band came on it was moving
noticeably, and I initially put it down to 3 pints in the bar and not
feeling that brilliant anyway before those, but looked across at my
mate and he sussed what it was !

Start of the gig itself was awesome, Hung Up then Out of the Sinking
and I think then Peacock Suit (always forget the exact order).
Weller and the band were really up for it and fired up. The crowd
were likewise and I wondered if it had been a bad night at Brighton
the night before but obviously not from Simon's review. The sound
seems to be going back to around the time of Heavy Soul, very
aggressive and completely guitar based. Highlights in no particular
order were :-

- Big grins from everyone after about 20 minutes when From the
Floorboards up was played, it certainly was the venue where that song
suited !

- On wobbly floor scale I think Thick as Thieves won the night,
really good version of that song. IMHO, Running on the Spot doesn't
transfer forward 20+ years quite as well.

- Porcelain Gods/ Guilded Splinters measured in at 16 minutes, and I
for one enjoyed it !! I watched for the rush to the bogs and there
wasn't one so I was feeling pretty smug until my mate announced he
was off to the toilet ! OK, I give in !

- The one lowlight was the last song before the encore - can't
remember which one it was but it dragged real bad, and from where we
were (by the soundboard) just ended up sounding a real mess. The
Porcelain Gods/Splinters extended version is much better.

- Pebble and the Boy and Broken Stones were excellent, ruined by
a 'going through the motions' YDSTM.

Not the best Weller gig I've ever been to but still very very good.
I did sell the ticket to The Forum on Wednesday, and posted it out
this morning. Big mistake, I'm gonna regret it.....
