Busy recreation day

Area recreation sports enthusiasts should mark their calendar for Sept. 13. The date, a Saturday, is chock full of runs, walks and bike rides.

There are 15 runs/walks scheduled in the Metroplex that day. Among the largest are The Protectors of Freedom Fire/Police Appreciation 5K, the Candlelighter Night Run and the Memory Walk.

The Protectors of Freedom is run in memory of a firefighter who was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York. The race will be at Texas Motor Speedway at 8 a.m., with more information available at (817) 251-9311 or at www.runnersandwalkers.com. The Candlelighter Night Run 5K/1K is one of the few races in downtown Fort Worth. The run, which benefits sightsaving programs, begins at 7:45 p.m. in Sundance Square, with more information available at (817) 810-1382 or www.candlelightersfw.org. The Memory Walk 3-mile starts at 9 a.m. at Trinity Park Pavilion in Fort Worth. It benefits Alzheimer's research, and more information is available at www.alz.org/memorywalk.

Also on the calendar for Sept. 13 are two bike rides: the Cowtown Classic Bike Ride and the Bike Your Brains Out.

The Cowtown Classic Bike Ride hopes to draw 1,500 entrants. The ride, which will begin at Crowley High School at 8 a.m., benefits Cook's Children's Medical Center and its Life After Cancer Program. This year, it will include 10-mile, 30-mile, 50-mile and 100K (62 miles) options. More details are available at www.cowtownclassicbikeride.org.

The Bike Your Brains Out also begins at 8 a.m., at Mary Orr Intermediate School in Mansfield. The distance options are 10 miles, 25 miles and 50 miles. For more details, call (817) 473-5710 or go to www.mansfieldisd.org/foundation/bike_rally_03.pdf.
