There were a few crashes, then silence, so it was clear she hadn't gone too far. Indeed, she huddled in a small thicket only a few feet away, berating herself for being so foolish. The pair couldn't have known she was there, but she knew firsthand that dogs had excellent noses, and a wolf's must be better. She should go farther, run until she dropped, but she feared to go too far from a path. Such was her fate, hoping to escape the tarlins that had captured her, and any others who might do the same, yet held close by that same life, because she had never learned to care for herself in the wild.*
