NewsObserver.comSo far, these Tar Heels have that true-blue look
Today the No. 3 Tar Heels (12-1, 1-0 ACC) enter the heart of ACC play, and college basketball is about to find out if it's true. It looks as if it is. A season-opening loss to Santa Clara passed like a final clap of thundering weirdness. Since then, there have been 12 straight wins the way Carolina used to do it.
Santa Clara coach Dick Davey found the Achilles part of these Heels. Of course, he said, Felton's absence (a one-game suspension) was also "a major, major factor," and "there was lot of luck involved."
Still, the veteran coach found something. "You can't be turning the ball over an excessive amount against a team like them, and you have to really get back on transition because of their speed," he said. "You have to rebound. Along with all those things, you have to make shots or you're going to have trouble."
Even if you do those things and win, you can have trouble. Santa Clara was so stunned by its victory that it has slid to 7-9.
"That was probably more damaging than helpful to us," Davey said.
For Carolina, that last taste of the recent past may have been more helpful than harmful.
"In a roundabout way, it was a good game for them to really wake them up to how energized they have to be to be successful," Davey said.
