Boyd, Adams lift Trinity Christian past Morton

Unlike his Trinity Christian teammate, Andrew Adams, Jacob Boyd didn't score 25 points on Tuesday night and he didn't drain eight 3-pointers from way beyond the arc.

But Boyd made the biggest difference in the Lions' 58-47 victory over Morton in a non-district boys basketball game at the Trinity Christian Gym.

After the Indians (21-5) clawed their way back from a 16-point deficit to take a 38-37 lead with 29 seconds left in the third quarter, Boyd gave Trinity the lead for good with a floating jumper in the lane only 10 seconds later. The 6-foot senior guard opened the fourth quarter with a nearly identical shot, and he converted a 3-point play on another similar jumper less than two minutes later.

Boyd also drew a critical charging foul on Morton in the fourth, and he scored eight of his 12 points in the final eight minutes.

"Jacob came in and gave us a huge lift there in the fourth,'' said TCHS coach Todd Duncan, whose Lions (26-8) will open the TAPPS 4A playoffs at home on Friday against Garland Christian. "We've been needing him to give us that energy — he's a good athlete and he pushes it up the floor. I was really proud, and I told him in the locker room, 'You made the difference for us in the fourth.' ''

Adams made the difference early on, nailing five 3-pointers in the first quarter and six of his first 10 attempts to help the Lions build a 29-13 lead only 21 seconds into the second period. He ended up shooting only 8 of 20 from 3-point range, though, and he and the rest of his teammates went on a cold spell until late in the third quarter.

While TCHS scored only 13 points in the second and third periods, brothers Calvin and Kendrick Johnson helped Morton come back with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Landon Pierce added 10 points for the Indians, and Brandon Eubanks scored all six of his points in the second half.

Morton was outscored 19-9 in the fourth, however, and Kendrick Johnson missed 5 of 6 free-throw attempts down the stretch.

"Early on when you get a spurt and you hit 3s like that, you tend to rely on those,'' Duncan said. "We stopped attacking, and that ended up hurting us in the second and third. Then we got back in an attack mode and were able to get some baskets.''

Although the game was inconsequential — each team had already clinched a district title — Trinity and Morton played aggressively and in front of a packed crowd. The Lions are ranked second in the state among large private schools, and Morton is ranked second among Class 1A schools.

Both teams were also state finalists last season, so Duncan and Morton coach Gant Caraway thought Tuesday's game would be a good postseason tuneup for both teams.

"When we set up this game, we wanted it to be a good game going into the playoffs,'' Duncan said. "We knew they were a good team, and we were hoping it would be a good challenge. And it was.''
