Subject: SCU's AD search

its going to be a quiet but open search

No end imminent in A.D. searches
CAL, SCU HUNT COULD CONTINUE INTO FALL

Santa Clara lacks a strong internal candidate to replace Levick, who begins her duties at St. Louis in early August.

The Broncos are not expected to name an interim A.D., and sources said the school administrators will keep the search as quiet as possible.

so it time to nominate candidates or at least "float" a trial balloon or two ... I'm hearing one name, an out-of the box kinda get, with strong SCU ties, but I'm afraid he's too high powered for the job

I'll be surprised if any of the above mentioned names give the job any consideration.

Levick left the organization and community deeply damaged. It seems like all of the work that Carroll Williams did to rebuild ties with alumni were ignored by Levick.

I'm glad she's gone, but whoever follows her will have a daunting task.

a couple of very interesting suggestions '92 ... Bill Duffy is VERY intriguing and would in my mind be a great organizational growth move … to watch what he has done with BDA & Assoc. in the past ten years is something truly impressive … I hope that the “powers that be” seek out his counsel …

In my opinion now is a GREAT time for SCU to make some bold moves to really point Bronco athletics in the right direction for the “new millennium” …. Cheryl stirred the pot quite a bit … possibly more than anyone anticipated … and now it would be an excellent time for those who REALLY care about Santa Clara to show that by constructively supporting the program … putting the pieces back that matter is what we need to be about …

I’m afraid I wasn’t privy to the reasoning that passed over Gerry Houlihan. And now that he has moved on into a hopefully, lucrative private law practice wonder whether he would be interested in moving back.

Brent Jones is the type of person who would send a message that the administration is “beyond doubt” about moving on. That it embraces its glorious past and the quality individuals that it spawned. I would LOVE to see football again be played on the Mission Campus, and perhaps someday it will. But the times, politics, and economics are not in our favor.

Double-D is a straight shooter and I would take him on my team any day. Obviously now is not a good personal time and the next AD really will have to spend a LOT of time outside of the 9-5. Let us just hope (and pray) that his necessary focus on his family will not consume him.

The next AD should figure out how to leverage the decades of accumulated goodwill and successes that are the hallmark of Santa Clara. The SCU community needs to be reenergized and re-involved in the process. We need to truly build on the successes that have been so hard won. We are closing in on the 70th anniversary of what may very well be the most storied year in Bronco Sports history … the year the Broncos beat Stanford at Stanford, USF in the City, Marquette in Chicago at Soldier’s Field, San Jose State at Spartan Stadium, St. Mary’s at Kezar, Gonzaga in Sacramento, and LSU (for the second year in a row) in the Sugar Bowl; undefeated, untied, and barely (9 total pts) scored upon.

It would be fantastic if by September 2007 the Broncos’ program was embraced by all with the enthusiasm and drive that those ‘Varsity Men’ displayed seven decades before. Again in my opinion the new AD needs to be a “unite-er”, a “visionary”, and a respecter of those who have gone before; someone to take consul from those who have, and are succeeding and forge a new, glorious page in Bronco Sports history. I am sure Cheryl “convinced” many (for a lot of people she seemingly makes an excellent first impression) of the value to the school of building a “successful” nationally recognized program. Now that we’ve invested in that process by conceivably tearing up some of the “foundation” we should not “throw-the-baby-out-with-the-bath” and retreat.

The U doesn’t need another “administrative wiz” without a sense of what Santa Clara, and being a Bronco means. Ask the folks in the B-school. It’s about differentiation, about core competencies, and vision. Its about leadership, and integrity, and relationship.

My candidate is someone who has that in spades; someone who is a proven leader, a proven make-it-happen type of person, someone with a sense of, and a stake in the rich history of Bronco Sports. Yes he is an outside-the-box candidate, but someone with proven ability to manage, to relate, and to fund-raise. He is someone who has the confidence of the administration (or so one might think) and his fellow Broncos. And yes, he does not have university athletic administrative experience. But the nuts and bolts of the athletic department are currently being done without the oversight of someone with such background, and the administration doesn’t seem to be worried. I would hope that we still have one of the most peer respected AD’s (Carroll W.) “on the bench” to help mentor anyone so inclined. So were do you look to find this person?? How about the current President of the Bronco Bench? Rick is (IMHO) the right type of person for the position …

I just read Ms. L's farewell Q&A on the Bronco Official website; the lack of an emotional connection with the university was manifest. Her discussions and memories were dominated by her time on the Farm. SCU appeared to be an afterthought, a mere portion of her bay area experience. Maybe that would have been different had she been here longer.
There is no argument that she was a fine administrator and a sound manager. There is also no argument that she and some of her staff lacked the subtlety, diplomacy and true love of the mission campus to translate her administrative skills into deep and broad alumni and fan support. I agree (as is often the case) with '66-- there is no reason an AD cannot combine administrative/managerial skill with an abiding love of the institution.
Any involved alumnus thinks his school is a special place, and not just because of its' Sears Cup or US News rankings, but because of its' history, traditions and attendant feelings of community. Athletics are a large part of a School's public face.Someone who understands what Santa Clara is and can be, as well the "botton line" of budgets and fundraising is someone who can take SCU to the next level.

[> [> [> Cheryl Greatest? Gift to SCU -- Bronco66, 01:16:48 07/28/04 Wed

Well said, you honor. I re-read (for the third or fourth time) the farewell "interview" and still get the feeling that it was/is a nice self-promotion thing. Cheryl was/is very good at that ... and by-in-large SCU isn't.

But if you are going to make some noise ... you NEED to make some NOISE!!! .... perhaps the SCU "culture" is not to brag about who and what we are ... on the other hand if you want to have more impact in the world, the world has to know that you exist ...

SCU's #1 major is (I believe) communications ... well from the "press" that we get (not just in athletics) you might not get that impression ... I have often said that the U needs to maximize it's resources ... If I were the head of the Communications Dept (or someone that had some influence over it) I would see to it that every class/student had to feature someting about SCU in one of their projects ... and learn how to "sell" it to the existing Media outlets ...

think of Students covering Bronco sports on the net!!! ... a weekly Bronco Highlight show ... (maybe even streaming video of Soccer matches or Baseball or Volleyball or ??? ... get the computing majors involved ... get the music dept. to provide MUSIC, the business school (marketing dept.?) to help market the product .... (I seem to remember group projects in Dr. Tricket's class back in the 60's)

anyway I HOPE that whoever the new AD is ... that she/he forges links through the campus and allows the athletic dept to be a resource to the academic programs that could use "practical" experience ....

GO Broncos !!!
