Gladstone Announces Four New Hires In Reorganized Athletic Department
Revamped staff eager to build towards future of Cal athletics.
Aug. 17, 2001 BERKELEY, Calif. - Culminating a three-month national search for top candidates, University of California Athletic Director Steve Gladstone today announced the hiring of four executive associate athletic directors who will play prominent roles in his new administration. They include Mark Stephens, long-time marketing executive and former captain of Cal's 1985 football team, Daniel Coonan, assistant commissioner for governance and enforcement with the Pacific-10 Conference,
Coonan, who previously worked at Cal as assistant athletic director, legal affairs, compliance and personnel from 1995-98 before joining the Pac-10 office, will join the department as executive associate athletic director, revenue. He will oversee football, men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball, including budget management, performance evaluation of coaches and the operation and maintenance of campus facilities. Coonan will also assist in fund raising and student-athlete recruitment involving the revenue sports.
Coonan, who holds college degrees from Notre Dame (BA, business administration, 1984) and Loyola Law School (Juris Doctorate, Loyola Law Review, 1986-87), features seven years of experience as a college administrator. Prior to his years at the Pacific-10 Conference and California, he held positions of assistant athletic director at Central Connecticut State in 1995 and assistant compliance director at Notre Dame in 1994. After graduating from Notre Dame, Coonan served as an assistant football coach at St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, Calif. for one season. He later worked for Smith & Hilbig as an associate attorney in nearby Torrance from 1987-1992 and was a partner in the Nakahara & Lane law firm in Torrance from 1992-94. He also served as finance director for the Corky Larson for Congress Campaign in Palm Springs in 1994.

(Counting Crows lead singer Adam) Duritz is more than just a locker room cheerleader. "He helps us in so many ways,'' executive associate athletic director Dan Coonan said. Duritz has donated to the Cal athletic department, and has a name plaque at Haas Pavilion.

"(Cal All-American) Craig (Morton who led both the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl during his 17-year NFL and was asked to rally a fund drive to renovate Memorial Stadium and update the football facilities) brings instant credibility to our development operation," said Cal associate athletic director Dan Coonan. "Who would be better to connect with our alumni and donors than a celebrity in the world of football? He has real star quality about him. But he also is unassuming and he has a nice way with people."

PROVO, Utah. -- Tom Holmoe will be in the stands tonight on the Utah campus in Salt Lake City. He'll be wearing blue, he'll be sitting among Cal people, and he'll be pulling for the school that fired him to win.
Holmoe's five seasons as Cal's football coach were a disaster --
Holmoe is far from a disaster as a man. He is an admirable human being with sterling character, which made it easy for Cal to invite him this evening. Dan Coonan, a Cal athletic department official, extended the invitation with a phone call.
"That's classy," said Holmoe, who accepted eagerly.

Bears will make money with Insight appearance
Posted on Sat, Dec. 27, 2003
PHOENIX - Cal not only won its first bowl game in 10 years Friday night, it also became the rarest of Pacific-10 Conference teams: one that does not lose money on a second-tier bowl game.
Dan Coonan, Cal's executive associate athletic director for revenue sports, estimated that the Bears would ``do a little bit better than break even, which is a real tribute to our fans.'' Coonan declined to give a specific figure -- or reveal how the money would be used -- because the bills have not been paid.
``We're waiting to see it first,'' he said.
