Subject: More Olympic GOLD for SCU Family

Olympic Beach Volleyball Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh’s mom, Margie Formico Walsh, played volleyball (and apparently was the MVP) at Santa Clara during the 1974 and 1975 seasons. When Kerri was in the fifth grade Margie was her first volleyball coach. Margie's dad (Kerri's grandfather), Marte Formico '51 (deceased) played f***ball at Santa Clara (1948-50) and is in the SCU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Kerri's sister Kelli (a 5'10" volleyball defensive specialist) transferred to SCU after spending two injury plagued seasons at Long Beach State. As a red-shirted Jr. in 2003 Kelli rang up 10 digs Sept. 12th in the Broncos match with No. 5 Nebraska.

Kerri's brother, Marte, who after the final win hauled her up almost 10 feet off the sand and into the stands, seems to have appeared on the 1996-97 SCU Men's Basketball Roster (#33 Marte Walsh F 6-6 210 FR) before transferring? to Cal Poly where he appeared on their 1998-99 Men's Basketball Roster (#13 Marte Walsh F 6-7 220 So.)

Another SCU connection may be Marte Formico '83 (that name is not exactly John Doe) who was the Alumni Assoc. President in 1996-97 – (perhaps an Uncle or cousin ? )

As a final? Historical note … in 1951 (the year Kerri’s Granddad graduated from SCU) 250 families from St. Clare’s Parish in Santa Clara were allocated to a new parish established on Santa Clara’s west side. In the fall of that year, the newly-formed St. Justin parish found a temporary house in a stable. The stable was a gracious gift of Mrs. Mary Taylor, owner of the property at 950 Gould (now Scott) Street. The vacant stable was located at the rear of Mrs. Taylor's colonial mansion.

Mrs. Taylor’s daughter Joan was the first to be married in the barn/church when she and the football star Marte Formico recited their vows on Nov. 29, 1951.

I remember going to Mass in Mrs. Taylor’s Barn …
Thank you Mrs. Taylor for “the Barn” and your GREAT … Great-Grand-Daughter? … Kerri

Congratulations to Kerri, the Walshes, the Formicos, the Taylors, and all the families who aspire to something great.
