Subject: O'Leary For 3

Very versatile forward. Shoots the three, gets to the basket, good rebounder. Very active, plays hard. A high major prospect.

2005 Focus: Ian O'Leary
By Greg Hicks
West Coast Recruiting Analyst

Ian O'Leary, a 6-6 junior small forward, has schools from the WCC, Ivy League and Big West expressing interest in him...

Ian O'Leary, 6-6 JR SF Woodlake (Calif.) Woodlake Christian, is the kind of player coaches like to have on their team. A versatile forward, O'Leary can shoot it from the stripe, go inside for rebounds, slash from the wing and play defense. He figures to get plenty of interest from mid to high major programs.
We spoke with O'Leary recently and asked him about the schools he's heard from so far.

"Santa Clara, San Francisco, St. Mary's, UC Davis, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Rutgers and Pacific," said O'Leary.

O'Leary told us that Yale, Santa Clara and Pacific all came by his school during the contact period.

"Stanford also called," said O'Leary. "I'm going to their camp later on."

O'Leary told us that a few schools have offered official visits. "Yale, Santa Clara and St. Mary's all said they want me to visit," said O'Leary.

O'Leary said he'd like to make a decision prior to his senior year. "It'd be nice to get it done at the end of the summer," O'Leary said.

A very good student, O'Leary told us that he has a 3.6 GPA. He just took the SAT last weekend.

O'Leary draws attention

By HANK VERESCHZAGIN, Democrat sports writer

A summer to remember may turn into an unbelievable autumn for Woodland Christian High School senior Ian O'Leary.

For most of his Cardinal career O'Leary was considered the pretty good kid who plays with Casey Neimeyer.

Last season, O'Leary started showing his dominance with a slashing game that left some college scouts drooling.

"I had only been contacted by mid-major schools," O'Leary said. "I thought that was all right. I figured I would be a mid-major player."

But it wasn't until this summer that O'Leary's ability to create, cut and shoot with the San Jose Pharoahs started turning the heads of major schools.

Pacific 10 recruiters and coaches from UCLA and Stanford believed O'Leary was a player who could turn a once-proud program back into a national power and keep one in the run for a national title.

"They like my size," O'Leary said. "They say I have a lot of versatility and potential."

Standing at 6 foot, 5 inches, O'Leary has never been forced to be a back-to-the-basket player because he grew so late.

Still when major schools came calling, O'Leary couldn't believe what was happening.

"It's pretty exciting," O'Leary said. "I started playing really well during the summer and my (AAU) coach said some schools were looking at me. Then my phone started ringing."

So far on his wish list is Washington State, UCLA, Stanford, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, UC Davis, University of New Mexico, University of Utah and Yale.

NorCalPreps.com fired off a quick scouting report for any colleges that hadn't heard of O'Leary before summer ended.

Under the radar rarely describes a real baller overlooked by scouts, rather the term emerges for a flash-in-the-pan type that played one good game. Ian O'Leary, however, hit the mark this summer when he emerged literally from nowhere to attract the attention of college scouts elevating his stock.

InsiderHoops. com named O'Leary the No. 5 prep recruit in the western region.

Another DeMarcus Nelson, who gained national prominence as an early signee with Duke, or LeBron James sitting here in Woodland?

O'Leary isn't dreaming that big yet.

"Maybe not that big, but we'll see."

Although he whiled away youthful days dreaming of playing for a national powerhouse, O'Leary isn't going to jump at the first offer.

"I've been trying to ignore the name," he said. "It's all been kind of a shocker. All of this has kind of blew up. God blessed me; I've been real fortunate."

He holds steadfast to one rule before making his final decision, which he expects to make in October.

"It's going to be where I'm more comfortable," O'Leary said. "That's more important than recognition. Some of the big schools will promise you a lot of things. You have to figure out which one is being straight with you."

Before he knows it, the second week in October will soon be here.

"I'm pretty stressed right now," O'Leary admitted. "They all seem so great. September is going to be crazy with all of the visits, but I'm pretty sure to sign by the second week in October."

And from there, O'Leary and Neimeyer will begin their final quest with the Cardinals in search of a section title.

I believe he can ask a certain Mr. Steve Nash if Coach Davey will be straight with him. I seem to recall that Double-D told Steve he would have to work on his "D" ... not a lot of fluff talk here ... just a good honest first rate education and a place where you can play ...

good luck to Ian ... and the Broncos !!!
