I wandered over to the Cal "Insider" message Board and perused a myriad disparate comments about Coonan. Our visitor from Cal was not, a lone voice in an ursine wilderness. A number of posters questioned Coonan's contribution to Cal's athletic program as well as his ability to get along with coaches etc. A somewhat greater number defended him, saying positve things about his work ethic, contribution and ability to get along. I guess we have to assume and hope that Locatelli, the Bench et. al. did their homework and that we view DC as a Tubula Rasa. He certainly said the right things at the press conference- his discourse on the SCU "family"(as well as Father L's observation about the need for a good relationship with the alumni and the Bench and the absence of any refernce to the divine Ms. L)spoke volumes about what the school perceives as what was lacking with the last athletic administration. There were no referecnces to "how things were done at Cal" (juxtapose that to Ms. L's references to the Farm when she departed)and he seemed to get the culture of the mission campus & I mean more than his reference to the Hut.
I hope the BBall team does well so Coonan doesn't feel pressured about even contemplating a change.Locatelli made passing references to the Nash teams and their accomplishments and how he looks forward to a reprise. Men's hoops, the soccer teams, baseball and I think volleyball were the only sports referenced by loc at the press conference. With a veteran and accomplished backcourt, an improving center and some promising recuits, DD will hopefully be able stay as long as he wants and leave on his terms.

JC -- read those posting too ... (comments later)

I met Dan at the press conference ... I think he is as advertised ... not as flamed ...

some of his post appointment comments:

from the Oakland Tribune/Alameda Times/San Mateo Times
http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82~28835~2365299,00.html

"The (sports) facilities are pretty good," he said of the Broncos campus. "I want to establish a rock-solid relationship with everyone connected to Santa Clara, and that's right up my alley.

"We need to get more revenue out of men's basketball, which is the foundation (of Broncos athletics). I want to create a game-day atmosphere, do everything we can to fill that place."

and quoted in The Chronicle's Dwight Chapin's article :

"Often times, when people take administrative jobs, there's a real project ahead for them," Coonan said. "I don't get that sense here. So many aspects of Santa Clara are already established to the point where I can spend time where it needs to be spent, in things like marketing and development."

every organization (and its "stakeholders") have expectations ... in reading the Cal board it appeared to me that a couple of posters had issues mostly that it appeared to them that Dan really didn't do much ...

well I think his style, demenor, and abilities are better suited to a Santa Clara than a Cal ... he even said so .. he was NOT interested in the Cal job ... he "applied" for the SCU job ...

even though he is 41 he has a *very* young family and it seems family is important to him (see his "acceptance" speech about his parents) ... Hey someone with BIG time *successful* college athletic administration experience (where improving ... not milking or tending was a major part of the job) and a family orientation ... who values the concept of building and maintaining solid, personal, positive relationships .... sounds to me like an Ideal candidate for the job ...

[> [> [> Glenn Dickey (SF Chron) on Coonan -- dent, 12:10:49 09/07/04 Tue

from the 9/7/04 SF Chronicle

Right move: Dan Coonan, a former athletic department executive at Cal, has only one regret about leaving to become the athletic director at Santa Clara. "I feel like Bob Rose (an associate AD at Cal who had been director of media relations for the Giants) when he left the Giants just before Barry Bonds had (completed) his record-setting season. I'm leaving just as the Bears have gotten really good in football."

The Santa Clara administration should have no regrets. Coonan is a man of impressive intelligence and integrity. He will do the job.

An Article we missed when DC was hired.BBall will get more support...and I suspect more scrutiny.

Cal official going to Santa Clara

By Dave Newhouse, STAFF WRITER
Inside Bay Area (Oakland Tribune)

Dan Coonan added it up. He has 24 years of Catholic education, including a business administration degree from Notre Dame, a law degree from Loyola Marymount and five years of teaching sports law at USF.
So it's only natural that he's the new athletic director at Santa Clara University, a Catholic institution.

Coonan, a Cal assistant athletic director in charge of revenue sports, was named Santa Clara's AD on Friday. He received a six-year contract in succeeding Cheryl Levick, now AD at Saint Louis University.

"I don't have a shred of red in my wardrobe, nor does my wife," Coonan said of Santa Clara's school colors.

Well, it's not advisable to wear red on the Cal campus.

Coonan contacted Santa Clara six weeks ago about the AD vacancy. He went through an extensive interviewing process before the search committee narrowed the field to Coonan and Evansville athletic director Bill McGillis. Coonan said he was offered the job Thursday.

At Cal, Coonan was in charge of football and men's basketball revenue. He has worked at Cal twice, starting in 1995 and returning in 2001 after three years as assistant Pac-10 commissioner for governance and enforcement.

That's where all the big decisions will be made at.

He and Dickey used to pony up to the watering trough together and tried lobbying for the Cal job. Didn't work.

Dickey is out too!
