According to Bob Bramlett, their AAU coach for the West Valley Basketball Club, (Sammett, Swift and Van Vliet) have made dramatic improvements since last season.

Sammett worked at putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the basket. Van Vliet, a true center, has added all kinds of offense. He’s no longer just a defensive stopper.

"Eric (Van Vliet) was a non-factor on 90 percent of Santa Cruz games last year," Bramlett said. "This year, he wants to be a double-double factor, which I think is a modest goal. The comments I’ve heard from coaches this summer, they say it’s evident he’s really been working on his footwork."

Van Vliet and Sammett have mutual interest in Santa Clara University, with Sammett (who has a 3.6 GPA) also being recruited by Holy Cross and Yale. Van Vliet is also being tracked by St. Mary’s College and the University of San Diego.

Van Vliet thinks there’s a good chance he and Swift will wind up at the same school.

"He’s definitely one of my best friends," Van Vliet said. "I’m not sure exactly what’s going on with him, but it wouldn’t be bad going to college with one of my best friends."

Santa Cruz senior basketball standout Cliff Sammet gave a verbal commitment on Wednesday to play for Santa Clara University next year.

Sammet, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 16 points per game for the Cardinals last season. He said he visited Santa Clara earlier this month and decided to cancel visits to the University of San Francisco and the Air Force Academy.

"I liked everything, the academics, the school, the basketball, everything," Sammet said.

Cliff sounds like the young man who will flourish at SCU and value the outstanding education both off and on the court that he will be exposed to.

Congratulations to Cliff and his familiy and the SCU family that made it possible ...

Really nice to see SCU continue to attract quality student-athletes from the area ... and beyond

I can think of no better place for a Good Student ... to learn the game. Double-D is a great coach and teacher ... especially of big men. Cliff will have the Travis and "Tree" to pound on him for a year and with Lloyd and Dick on the sidelines (and in the teaching lanes) this is looking real good. .... this is going to be a good year and 05-06 even better ...

Biography: Good player with skills,
Some thoughts about next year and beyond...
According to the season preview, Brandon Rohe may redshirt, That's probably a good thing for a couple of reasons. First, Rohe can be a major contributor if he's healhty, and with Doron, Rohde, Henke and Dougherty, there's depth at the 2. In 05-06, Rohe's versitility will be more critical (remember he played quite a bit of the point 2 years ago. With the departure of Perkins and KB, I would guess that in the absense of a JUCo or big tranfer pickup this year, that the starting backcourt will be Angley and Rohe next season.

The star crossed Jordan Legge is recovering from mono. When is that kid going to catcha break? I wonder if the staff will think about redshirting him too. But there is so much depth at 4 with Parham, Neisen, Borchart and Tibbets (and OK redshirting this year). Still it might be woth it to give him a chance to play @ %100 for at least one season in his career.
Coach D sounds more than 'coach speak' positive about the upcoming season. If Kb and Perkins bring their 'A' games regularly, Denison and Niesen provide an interior presence and the team stays healty, there will be some surprises. Certainly, SCU'll transend the 6th place prediction Street and Smith's has earmarked for them.
As for the rest of the recruiting class, another legitimate center, a 1-2 combo guard and a pure point guard seem to be needs. Looking at the Prep West Hops board, they seem tob elooking at a lot of smaller, quicker point guards. Maybe they figure to run more in the future.

this year the Broncos should "over-achieve" as is usual with a DD team ... and Gosh ... it would be nice to see Jordan have a good year ... perhaps a Red Shirt is in the cards ... an MBA from SCU is nothing to sneeze at ...

given where some of the rest of the conference is going a little (lot??) more quickness in the backcourt is probably a necessity ... Saw Linden at a Soccer match this week ... he was announced as the male Scholar-Athlete of the week ...
obviously a hold over from last season

Bronco Scholar-Athletes for Week 26

Linden Tibbets

A center/forward for the Broncos, Linden
Tibbets’ dunk over Gonzaga’s Tony Skinner
in the WCC Tournament was one of the
season’s top individual highlights. The
Duncanville, Texas native has a 3.2 GPA as a
computer engineering major.

a smart young man ... and he thinks there is something to this year's Broncos ...
