Other films to consider for social importance:
A Clockwork Orange-treatment of brutal violence and sex as comedy.
2001: A Space Odyssey-Kubrick had the stones to release a film with very little dialogue, the most important character as a blinking light, and which uses Ligeti's music as much as words to tell a far-out dreamscape of a story. Brilliant.
The Godfather-Without a doubt, it has inspired more terrible films and cliches than anything, except maybe Die Hard. The Led Zeppelin of cinema, in that respect. That in itself is a tribute to the overwhelming greatness of this film (parts I and II)-everyone wants to make their Godfather, and few have succeeded.
Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan-One can argue the historical accuracy, but if nothing else, Spielberg reminded Generation X and Y why they should listen to their grandparents and stop bitching about how life is unfair because they can't have an XBox. Tell that to the guy with the number tattooed on his arm, or the one whose arm was left behind on Normandy Beach.
Quiz Show, The Insider, The Usual Suspects-because they remind us all just how easy it is for people to f*$! with your mind.
In The Heat of the Night (and its 80's successor in some ways, Mississippi Burning)-to remind us that we still have a long way to go in some respects
American Beauty-just because
Just some food for discussion, let's keep this going.
