What it seems to me is that we have another Korea and another Vietnam going on at the same time. In Iraq, we did oust Saddam, which can only be good, but beyond that we don't appear to have a very clear plan. I fear that this will drag on for several long and divisive years before we get down to a limited presence like we have in Japan and Germany right now. In fact, the 2008 election may still be about Iraq. This feeling is based in part on the pure fanaticism of the rebel forces in Iraq--they are religious zealots willing to die for their cause. Remember in Godfather II, when Michael Corleone makes the prediction that the rebels can win in Cuba? I don't think the rebels will win, but there are enough of them that it will take a LONG time to wear them down. Wiping out one guy will inspire ten more guys to take up the cause. Religion is a powerful thing.
Meanwhile, we still have forces in Afghanistan looking for the remaining threat of bin Laden and friends, but that mission already seems to be forgotten in the minds of the average American. It took a football player (and without belittling all other servicemen and women, a role model) dying to remind us that the eastern front of the war on terror still exists. This could also drag on for a while. It's not the same mission as Korea, but Korea isn't on the forefront of most people's minds anymore, and I fear Afghanistan will be remembered the same way...until we get bin Laden.
The way things are looking, and with Bush's domestic policy dismal at best, the President may need a bin Laden "October Surprise" to save himself. That, or a strong Ralph Nader candidacy.
