I'm taking a lot of my Devil's Advocate position on this issue from the general of philosophy of Malcolm X. I think in this instance, Malcolm might argue that blacks "freed" living in Detroit in the early 1800s actually were worse off than the slaves and while free on paper, the brand of racism that existed against blacks in the North at that time and didn't exist with anywhere near that kind of vitriol against other ethnic groups prevented the Black Man's advancement in society and escape from the ghettos. Already by 1800, there was a kind of institutional racism that held all Blacks in a sort of bondage, north or south, "free" or not that resulted totally and exclusively from the forced transport rather than the free immigration. I think that's what Malcolm might argue, and I think their is a certain legitimacy to it. And if you're going to argue this point, please refrain, in fact no one ever say to me, that blacks at any time could "go back to Africa." 100, 200, 300 years later that was and is a ridiculous assertion. It's easy to say but totally unfeasable and I don't accept it as a sanguine argument.
