I agree with Kenny and Chip, go with the glued calls. They didn't touch on this but glued calls stand up to weather better, as long as the builder uses polyurethane glue. Hewn calls are affected more by weather.

I'm confused by Ed's comments. I looked at his page on the Calltrader site:

Unless Ed has figured a way to make bloodwood and cherry grow together he too makes, as he calls them "Glued Up" calls.

So when it comes down to it make the calls you like. Start out by buying some calls and seeing which one you want to build by which ones you like.
