The wood thickness for the sides, like Chip I believe said differs from wood to wood. A general rule of thumb is to start out at about 1/4 inch at the bottom and gradually taper as you go up. Don't stay 1/4 inch and taper right at the top, gradually taper the sides thinner.

Best way to learn is to glue yourself up some boxes of different woods. They don't have to be pretty, but after they're built gradually sand down the sides until you get the tone you like. Then use the caliper and record the measurements.

But even that is just a vague guideline. To quote Neil Cost, "each piece of wood has it's own characteristics, even pieces cut from the same block."
